Alyson Yee is a teenager who lives in Elk Grove, California. She made the comic book Life in Smoke as her Girl Scout Gold Award Project and is very passionate about advocating against tobacco use in teens. Utilizing her art skills, she drew and constructed the comic book herself, with the hope that other teens would read it and feel compelled to fight against the tobacco industry. After a year, pouring hundreds of hours into drawing and researching the effects of tobacco, she hopes this comic book had as much as a profound effect on you as it did for her.
Special thanks goes out to the following people who generously donated their time and or money to help with this project.
My family really helped a lot during this project, especially my dad (Allen Yee). Without his tech savviness, I would have a lot of trouble creating the website as well as filling out the proper forms needed to make this a successful comic book. My mom (Qing-Wen Yee) really helped me construct the story for the comic book, helped me proof-read whenever I had a new draft of the comic book and translated a digital copy of my comic book into Chinese. Finally my sister, Adelyne, helped with some of the artwork as well as tell her classmates and friends about the comic book.
For my project advisor, Danielle Driscoll, I am speechless for all the help you provided throughout the project. From constantly encouraging me and helping with the financial aspect of the project, I am forever grateful for your sincere help. Thank you for your expertise in anti-tobacco work and proof-reading the facts in my comic book. Especially coming up with the idea to use the pictures that I drew of my comic book into a short film with voice-overs was an awesome and innovative idea that just adds another dimension to my project.
My friends also helped me with this project. Two of my friends, Amrita Kaler and Maryam Nekaien, continued supporting me throughout the project, and their excitement after reading my comic book filled me up with happiness and pride. Another friend, Lilianna Morales, helped with translating the comic book into Spanish to reach a hopefully wider audience. One of other friends, Thuong Pham, also worked to translate the comic book to Vietnamese and created a beautiful image for me. I'm truly touched by Thuong's initiative as she readily volunteered herself to translate the comic book and her amazing art skills. I finally want to thank Samuel Tong, a friend that led a similar project- an anti-vaping video series for teens in my high school. When researching and working on this video series, I was able to improve my art skills for when I drew my comic book digitally and have a better idea of the types of facts I wanted to include in the comic book.
